In September, the SMJFL will be teaming up with AFL Victoria to launch the Women and Girls First Bounce Umpire Program. This initiative introduces umpiring through three Monday night sessions, designed to give players a new perspective on the game and experience it through the eyes of an umpire.

The program is open to all registered women and girls aged 12 to 18 who would like to give umpiring a go. Each participant will receive:

  • A free whistle
  • Free umpire attire
  • The chance to attend and umpire an AFL Half-Time Auskick Grid Game

Clubs that register five or more participants will also receive a $400 incentive, provided all participants attend all three sessions and commit to umpiring in the 2025/2026 season.

Registrations are now open. Please share this opportunity with any players or teams who may be interested — whether coming along solo or with friends. The registration flyer is attached and includes a QR code to sign up.

We hope this program inspires more women and girls to get involved in umpiring and look forward to welcoming participants to the sessions.
